27 November 2014 - Old Eastbournian reunion dinner in Sydney

The annual OE reunion dinner in Sydney was held at La Scala Italian restaurant in Woollahra on Thursday 27 November, and saw a great turnout of 18 guests.

Eastbournian Society President David Winn (School 1954–59) was on hand to present a summary of future development plans at the College and John Penn (Pennell 1949–52) spoke about the Arnold Embellishers and the Devonshire Society.

Thanks go to OE Sydney rep Sam Miller (School 1960–65) for organizing the event and also to Rupert Bairamian (School 1975–80) who provided the Tellurian wines and selected the venue.

26 November 2014 - Banking, broking and asset management networking event

Financial services, specifically the banking, broking and asset management sectors, were the focus of our latest business and career networking event.

Almost 50 OEs, parents and current pupils attended the evening at the offices of PricewaterhouseCoopers in More Place, close to London Bridge, on Wednesday 26 November.

Our thanks go to Darren Meek (Blackwater 1982–87) for hosting the event and for introducing the guest speaker, Luke Ellis, President of Man Group, who has oversight of the investment operations of Man’s three main hedge fund divisions.

Luke spoke about his own experiences working in the City and discussed the idea of 'employability', not just at the interview stage but also in terms of those who will succeed and go on to be offered greater opportunities in their careers.

One parent who attended commented later that current pupils 'are very lucky to hear this sort of perspective and I think that it is very good that the school is focused on offering this sort of opportunity.'

The picture shows Darren Meek, left, with Luke Ellis. Further pictures from the evening are in our members area, which you can access by logging on. If you do not yet have a username and password, please click on the link to 'New user registration' on the Login page.

20 November 2014 - OE reception and supper in Hong Kong

Jeremy Newton (Gonville 1964–69), Eastbournian Society rep in Hong Kong, reports on the latest OE gathering there:

On Thursday 20 November, a happy crowd of OEs gathered at the Members bar of the Hong Kong Club in Central. Hosted by Charles Dickson (Wargrave 1965–69), the evening was attended by Chris Binge (Gonville 1970–75) and his wife Helen (née O'Connor) (Nugent 1973–75), Douglas Fergusson (Blackwater 1966–70), Marc Denny (Gonville 1995–2000), Tim Freshwater (School 1958–63), Tommy Tong (Pennell 1982–87), Charles and Bernadette Dickson, William Barkshire (Blackwater 1978–83), Rory Leader (Pennell 1972–77) and Jeremy Newton.

Over the wine, wide-ranging discussions took place centring of course on the College, its ambitious development plans and historic memories. Douglas told us about Lord Richards and his planned visit to Hong Kong in the summer of 2015 which hopefully will be the focus of a well-attended gathering here.

Later on in the evening, some stalwarts repaired to the Bowling Alley bar downstairs for a light supper and the convivial evening closed well in time for the last train home – the MTR seems to be the only transportation system in Hong Kong that hasn't been disrupted by the current 'umbrella movement' demonstrations!

Many thanks of course are due to Charles Dickson and his wonderfully supportive wife Bernadette for enabling us to enjoy the famed hospitality of the Hong Kong Club. We are hoping to arrange another event in the New Year and all being well will see a larger group of OEs attending.

17 November 2014 - Inaugural South-East Asia reception in Singapore

David Stewart, Director of the Eastbournian Society, attended the inaugural reception and dinner for Old Eastbournians in South-East Asia on Monday 17 November.

The venue was the Singapore Cricket Club and we were delighted to see not only local OEs but also those who had travelled from a bit further afield, including David Braithwaite (School 1964–69) and his wife Inez, from Jakarta, Indonesia, Richard Bones (Wargrave 1950–53) from Chonburi, Thailand, and Tom Nicholson (Blackwater 1984–89) from Malaysia.

Following the drinks reception, David gave a presentation on the College's Project 150 redevelopment plans before the group enjoyed dinner. Our thanks go to the two OE reps in Singapore, Richard Austen (School 1967–72) and Michael Oxborrow (School 1955–59), who helped facilitate the event.

14 November 2014 - Old Eastbournian reunion dinner in Melbourne

Anthony Copp (Blackwater 1960–64) reports on the OE reunion in Victoria:

Our annual reunion dinner was held again in Melbourne at the Pullman Hotel, Albert Park, and it was good to have David Winn (President of the Eastbournian Society) join us as usual on his annual visit to Victoria.

We had a most convivial evening and enjoyed a good measure of reminiscing.

David shared with us details of the future building works approved for the College vision. We were appreciative of seeing the plans and photographs for this major project.

The picture shows, left to right, back row: Simon Vinson (Gonville 1969–74), David Winn (School 1954–59) Anthony Copp; front row: Philip Venn (Blackwater 1938–42), Wendy Barr (daughter of Philip) and Carol Copp (wife of Anthony).

13 November 2014 - Eastbourne pub evening

The latest of our local pub evenings took place at The Dolphin in South Street on Thursday 13 November.

The Eastbournian Society aims to bring together the College family of friends and supporters, so it was good to see not only Old Eastbournians, but also members of staff and parents enjoying an informal drink.

Other pub evenings are also held regularly in London – the next one is on Thursday 20 November – as well as at university towns and cities throughout the country for OE students.

Full details are in our Forthcoming events list.

12 November 2014 - King Charles III at Wyndham's Theatre

The latest Eastbournian Society London theatre trip was to see King Charles III at Wyndham's Theatre on Wednesday 12 November.

The play, by Mike Bartlett, is a controversial look at the people beneath the crowns, the unwritten rules of our democracy, and the conscience of Britain’s most famous family.

Pictured here outside the theatre are some of the society members who benefited from the discounted tickets we arranged through a group booking.

The next meeting to discuss future events, including theatre trips, will be held on Thursday 8 January, so if you have a particular play or musical that you would like to see, please let us know.

9 November 2014 - Remembrance Sunday service and dedication of new memorials

The College paid its respects to Old Eastbournian casualties of war at the Remembrance service in the College Chapel on Sunday 9 November.

Among the attendees were Chairman of Governors General Sir Kevin O’Donoghue KCB CBE (Powell 1961–66), former chairman Admiral Sir Ian Forbes KCB CBE (Powell 1960–65) and Canon Adrian Carey, son of Gordon Carey (Headmaster 1929–38).

The service was followed by the CCF parade on College Field and the Act of Remembrance at the Memorial Gates, after which ten new memorial stones were dedicated.

These carry the names of ten Old Eastbournians who were killed in the First World War, but whose names had not previously appeared on the memorial panels. Their names had been discovered following research by Bill Bowden (Wargrave 1961–65), one of the College Archives team.

Further details about the memorial stones and the OEs they commemorate are carried on our Memorial page.

6 November 2014 - Eastbournian Society members enjoy talk on Eastbourne's history

Eastbournian Society members enjoyed an illustrated talk on the history of Eastbourne, which took place in the Long Room on Thursday 6 November.

Local historian Paul Jordan spoke about how the town reacted to local, national and international events through the eyes of a typical local family, the Woods.

Although the family is fictitious, all the historical facts are true, but by seeing events through the eyes of ordinary people we were presented with a different perspective on local history.

Where people worked, the shops they used, the fashions they wore, the houses they lived in and the different types of leisure activities and entertainment, were all covered.

This is the first in the series of five talks and covered the period from 1914 to 1926. Paul will be returning in Spring 2015 with the next talk which will take the family up to the outbreak of the Second World War.

Ed Atkinson (Pennell 1979–84), our Eastbournian Society rep in the United Arab Emirates, organised a dinner for Old Eastbournians and other College supporters in Dubai on the evening of Thursday 6 November 2014.

The meal was held at the Chamas restaurant in the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

This is the latest in a series of get-togethers that Ed has hosted in recent years for those OEs and their families living and working in the UAE.
