11 July 2018 - Strictly Ballroom The Musical

The latest Eastbournian Society theatre trip proved to be a popular one, with 40 members taking advantage of discounted group rates to see Strictly Ballroom The Musical at the Piccadilly Theatre in London.

The show, based on Baz Luhrmann’s multi award-winning movie Strictly Ballroom, tells the story of maverick championship ballroom dancer Scott, who defies all the rules of competition to follow his heart, and teams up with left-footed partner Fran to win the Pan Pacifics his way.

Featuring Will Young in the new role of Wally Strand, Jonny Labey as Scott and Zizi Strallen as Fran, the show was greatly appreciated by the group, some of whom are pictured here outside the theatre just before the start.

9 July 2018 - Paul Mayhew-Archer (Reeves 1967-71) to appear at Edinburgh Fringe

Paul Mayhew-Archer (Reeves 1967-71) is to perform his first one-man show at the Edinburgh Fringe this year between 1 and 26 August.

Paul, co-writer of the sitcom The Vicar of Dibley and producer and writer of many other comedy programmes on both TV and radio, will be appearing in Incurable Optimist at venue 302, the Underbelly in Bristo Square.

Paul has Parkinson's and made an award-winning documentary for the BBC called Parkinson's: The Funny Side. Since then he has appeared at London's Comedy Store (you can see a short clip here).

His show is about the therapeutic power of comedy: Paul is not contagious, but he is worth catching. Richard Curtis, his Dibley co-writer, says about the show: 'Very funny - and moving too'. It has also been picked by The Times as one of its 'top tickets' for the festival.

6 July 2018 - Foundation Golf Challenge raises money for College bursary

The annual Foundation Golf Challenge was held on Friday 6 July at the Royal Eastbourne Golf Club, helping to raise funds for the Peter Bibby Award.

Eighteen teams took part and had an enjoyable day's golf in very hot and sunny conditions. The day had started with registration and coffee and bacon rolls before the shotgun start at 12.30pm.

The players were kept refreshed on the course with supplies of water and beer, before returning to the club house for the traditional group photo.

Prizegiving followed, with the winning team being announced as AFC. This led in to the evening dinner, during which there was a charity auction, to help raise money for the Peter Bibby Award, which provides bursary funding for a place at the College for a talented local cricketer. Final figures are still being calculated, but the total amount raised through the auction, sponsorship and entry fees is expected to be at least £13,000.

Our thanks go to all who took part, donated prizes and auction items, and sponsored the event, including main sponsor M-Tech Systems.
