30 June 2020 - Speech Day recording now available

This year's Speech Day was a little bit different to normal, being broadcast live on the internet on the morning of Saturday 27 June.

Although the College could not hold the traditional picnic on College Field, it did give us the opportunity to invite all members of the College community throughout the world to experience a 'virtual' Speech Day from their own homes.

A recording of the broadcast is now available and can be viewed at https://vimeo.com/429674626. The recording starts at 3:14 so you will need to click on the time bar at the bottom of the screen to move forward past the opening caption.

You may also be interested in reading the College Speech Day booklet, which is normally handed out to parents and others on the day. This year you can read it online at https://online.flipbuilder.com/hfar/tsmi/.

Speech Day this year is going to be a little different to normal but we are pleased to invite you to experience a 'virtual' Speech Day this coming Saturday, which will be streamed live on the internet.

For the first time this will be an opportunity for Old Eastbournians and other members of the society, wherever they are in the world, to take part in the culmination of the school year as it happens.

Please click on this link to see the broadcast: https://vimeo.com/event/108597

You will be able to see some music being performed including the whole school singing Jerusalem, the awarding of some of the major prizes including the John Le Brocq Scholarship and the Tom Lewis Cup and speeches from the Headmaster, the Heads of School and the Chairman of Governors. It will give you a real flavour of how the College has operated during the Covid-19 pandemic. We do hope you are able to join us.

You can also read the Speech Day booklet which is available online at: https://online.flipbuilder.com/hfar/tsmi/ and features highlights of the College year.

8 June 2020 - Headmaster Tom Lawson writes for The Property Chronicle

Headmaster Tom Lawson has written an article for The Property Chronicle, the online and print publication which offers a perspective on property, alternative assets, investments and more.

In the article, Mr Lawson considers the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the independent school sector. He says that although parents have been tremendously loyal during the period of lockdown inevitably there are some who have seen their businesses fold. They can be supported by bursaries but this has an effect on the school's revenue stream.

On the positive side, he says that using technology much more effectively in the classroom, which was expected to take years to achieve, has been 'turbocharged by the months of enforced remote learning'.

7 June 2020 - Maurice Trapp (Gonville 1962-67) named in list of Top 20 rugby coaches

Maurice Trapp (Gonville 1962-67) has been named as one of the Top 20 rugby coaches by The Rugby Paper.

Maurice, the President of New Zealand Rugby, came in at number 18, with this citation:

Another disciple of Jim Greenwood at Loughborough, Trapp was a workmanlike back five forward at Quins but took to coaching with a vengeance when he emigrated to New Zealand. Secured the Auckland job ahead of Graham Henry in 1986 with his side losing just three games in the next five seasons. It was a remarkable spell in charge by any criteria.

Maurice was the guest of honour at the Eastbournian Society London dinner in April 2018.
