8 July 2020 - Tom Copeland (Reeves 2002-07) to run the South Downs Way in 24 hours

Tom Copeland (Reeves 2002-07) is planning to run the full length of the South Downs Way in under 24 hours, and all in the name of charity.

Tom, together with three friends, will be setting off from Winchester on Saturday 18 July and hopes to arrive in Eastbourne the following day, after covering 160km (100 miles).

He says: 'We're running self-supported and socially distanced, stopping along the route to refuel and rehydrate. It's not going to be fun, it's not going to be pretty, but it's going to be epic.'

Tom is raising money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, which he says is a cause 'close to my heart after my beautiful goddaughter was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis earlier this year'.

His fundraising page is at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tom-copeland-sdw and you can read more about the challenge at https://sdw2020.wixsite.com/home.

7 July 2020 - Old Eastbournian get-together in Hong Kong

A group of OEs got together in Hong Kong recently to celebrate their College connections.

Under the current Covid-19 regulations they were allowed a maximum of eight people at the Hong Kong Club.

Charles Dickson (Wargrave 1965-69) tells us that they enjoyed a magnum of excellent wine provided by Tim Freshwater (School 1958-63), after which they spent the remainder of the evening in the Bowling Alley Bar of the Club.

Others who attended were George Wong (Gonville 2002-07), Roger Leader (Pennell 1969-75) and Mark Pierrepont (Powell 1969-74), who welcomed Maddie Eckert (School 2002-07), Ben Colyer (Wargrave 2002-07) and his fiancée Fiona Taylor (Watt 2007-11) to the Club.

The photo was taken after Tim had left, and shows, left to right, Maddie, Mark, Charles, Fiona, Roger, George and Ben.

6 July 2020 - Old Eastbournians at the Epsom Derby

There were two Old Eastbournian connections at the Epsom Derby on Saturday 4 July - jockey Harry Bentley (Wargrave 2005-08) and trainer John Gosden (Gonville 1965-69).

Harry, pictured, was making his debut at the Derby, riding Max Vega. In an interview with the Yorkshire Post before the race he said: 'It means an awful lot. It's the biggest race of the season. The Derby is the biggest race in the country and, arguably, the most important race in the world.'

He also said that the absence of crowds this year would not dampen his enthusiasm for the race. On the day Harry started off chasing the leaders but lost ground and Max Vega weakened towards the end, coming in at 14th place.

John Gosden was the trainer for Worthily, an outsider at 40-1, which finished in 16th place.

1 July 2020 - The Foundation 2020 Challenge

We are pleased to announce the Foundation 2020 Challenge. David Stewart, Foundation and Eastbournian Society Director, writes:

No one can pretend that the Covid-19 pandemic will not cause financial hardship.

Over the years, the College has had a long track record of supporting its own community.

For the next month we will be raising funds to support boys and girls who will be taking their GCSEs and A-levels in 2021 and whose families have been severely impacted financially by the pandemic through no fault of their own – this is our Foundation 2020 Challenge.

If you would like to show solidarity with these Eastbournians and help them fulfil their potential by completing their education at the College, then please click on this link to donate:

1 July 2020 - Cancellation of OE reunion

We are sad to announce that we have decided to cancel this year's Old Eastbournian reunion, which was due to have been held on Saturday 5 September.

As this will be the first weekend of the Michaelmas term, the College does not want to do anything which will put pupils or OEs at any risk.

This means that the Arnold Embellishers AGM, which is normally held on reunion day, has also been cancelled. Members will be informed separately about alternative arrangements that are currently being planned.

By September 2021 we will certainly all be in need of a celebration. Therefore the 2021 reunion will not be restricted to any particular year groups but will be for OEs from across the generations - it should be a spectacular occasion!

Further details of this will be announced in the next edition of the Old Eastbournian magazine, which will be published in February 2021, as well as on the website and in our regular monthly email newsletters next year.
