29 March 2014 - Tour of the Houses of Parliament

Saturday 29 March was a bright sunny day for our trip to the Houses of Parliament. Having passed through the airport-style security we headed for Westminster Hall to pick up our audio headsets for this self-guided tour around the parliamentary buildings.

Passing through St Stephen's Hall to the Central Lobby, we then had the chance to explore both chambers, the Lords and the Commons, as well as the Royal Gallery and the Robing Room. It was a fascinating walk through history.

Some of the group who went are pictured here just before heading into the Parliamentary estate.

A further trip to Westminster is being considered for later in the year. If you are interested please contact John Thornley on jt@eastbourne-college.co.uk or 01323 452314 and we will contact you once we have some dates in mind.

26 March 2014 - Theatre trip to 'Blithe Spirit'

The latest of our London theatre trips took place on Wednesday 26 March at the Gielgud Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue, where a group of ES members saw the matinee performance of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit.

Some of the group are pictured here outside the theatre.

The star attraction was the veteran actress Dame Angela Lansbury in the role of Madame Arcati, the eccentric medium.

This was the first time in forty years that Dame Angela had appeared on the West End stage and we were lucky to get tickets for this sell-out show.

21 March 2014 - Eastbournian Society careers convention

Pupils from Year 11 and the Lower Sixth attended the annual careers evening held in the College Theatre (Big School) and the Gym on Friday 21 March. On hand to offer advice and guidance were Old Eastbournians, parents and staff, covering a diverse range of professions from accountancy to veterinary science. More recent leavers had travelled back to Eastbourne to represent their universities, including Bath Spa, Cambridge, Cardiff, Durham, Leeds, Newcastle, Nottingham, Oxford Brookes, Reading, Royal Agricultural University at Cirencester, Sheffield and Warwick. Also present were companies offering advice on gap years and volunteering.

The College is always grateful to those individuals who give up their time to pass on their knowledge and experiences to those starting to explore the world of higher education and work. If you are interested in helping out at future careers conventions, please contact the Head of Careers, Jane Wilders, on 01323 452211 or jfwilders@eastbourne-college.co.uk .

20 MARCH 2014 – EASTBOURNIAN SOCIETY ANNUAL LONDON DINNER

The annual London dinner is an opportunity to celebrate Eastbournian achievement, and this year we were delighted that our guest of honour was Paul Stewart (Wargrave 1994–99).

In 2013, Paul completed a gruelling Iron Man challenge to raise funds and awareness about spinal injury research. This involved a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile cycle ride, a 26.2 mile walk and a cliff-face climb.

A daunting enough prospect in itself, but Paul had to show real determination to complete it because he was severely injured in a snowboarding accident in 2008 which left him paralysed below the waist. His efforts helped raise over £400,000 for the charities Wings for Life and Spinal Research.

During the dinner, held at Church House Conference Centre in Westminster, guests were able to see Paul's inspiring story on video, followed by a question-and-answer session hosted by Nigel Wheeler.

9 March 2014 – Lord Richards of Herstmonceux on 'Desert Island Discs'

General The Lord Richards of Herstmonceux GCB CBE DSO DL (Wargrave 1965–70) appeared on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs programme on Sunday 9 March. Lord Richards, who served as the Chief of the Defence Staff until his retirement last August, spoke with affection of his time at Ascham Prep School and at the College.

He also discussed the military campaigns he led in East Timor, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan, and revealed the little-known fact that he had once spent an evening as Joan Collins' bodyguard.

The programme can be downloaded from the Desert Island Discs website at www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/desert-island-discs
