Do you remember the TV comedy ‘Are You Being Served?’ which was set in a London department store?
College Archivist Paul Jordan will be taking a nostalgic look back at the department stores of Eastbourne mentioning, of course, Bobby’s (later Debenhams) where fashionable women could take afternoon tea while listening to the orchestra or watching a fashion parade.
Other stores mentioned are Plummer Roddis, Dale & Kerley (later Barker’s), and the long-vanished Beales.
There are several College connections with these stores and others in the south of England like Bentalls of Kingston upon Thames, and Grants of Croydon.
The talk is fully illustrated.
The event starts at 4.00pm with tea and posh sandwiches and cake before Paul takes us into a lost world when shopping was an event in itself.
Please let John Thornley know if you wish to join us (jt@eastbourne-college.co.uk or 01323 452314).
Pay on the day: £5 cash.
