Andrew Wicks (Powell Jan 1977-Jun 1981) features as Gerontius in this classic choral work.
The Dream of Gerontius is a dramatic oratorio by Elgar which follows a man's (Gerontius) spiritual journey through death, guided by his angel, towards God's judgment and eventual rest in Purgatory, as depicted in Cardinal Newman's poem. The piece explores themes of faith, mortality and the afterlife, showcasing Elgar's musical depth through powerful choral writing, dramatic orchestral passages, and deeply felt melodies that evoke both darkness and serenity.
Singers who would like to join some 140 other singers accompanied by the 70-strong Eastbourne Symphony Orchestra are very welcome.
The conductor is Graham Jones, one of the ESO's founders who was College organist and on the College staff from 1976 to 2012 (director of music from 1991).
The chorus comprises singers from the ES Chorus, Hailsham Choral Society and Noteworthy Voices who sing the semi-chorus.
OEs and others who sang in choral concerts during their time here may wish to join us for this glorious work. John Walker (College director of music 1965-1991) was the conductor in the Congress Theatre in 1969 and also in1980 when Richard Lewis sang Gerontius. (The history of College music has more details.) This was also the venue for the 1994 performance under the baton of Graham Jones who took it to Chichester Cathedral in 1999 (with now-Dame Sara Connolly as the Angel), and then to St Saviour's in 2016 with OE Andrew Wicks singing Gerontius as he will do in the 2026 performance.
Archived photos and information from all past College choral concerts with the ESO are here.
You will find details of rehearsals and concert information for the 2026 performance here where you will be able to purchase tickets nearer the event.
Singers who wish to register their interest can do so on this form.
