Ivor Lloyd 1950-2026

Ivor Lloyd (Powell 1964-68) died on 26 August 2026 after a short illness, aged 76. We have received this tribute from Gary Hammond, Chairman of Eastbourne Rowing Club, where Ivor served as President.

Ivor started rowing at Eastbourne College where he won the the M4+ national Schools title. He joined Eastbourne Rowing Club in the late 60s, winning the JS4+ south coast championships and Senior Sculling Championship. He also held the world record for sculling the English Channel. He held Eastbourne, and Eastbourne Rowing Club, dear in his heart and was offering advice and direction right up to the last few weeks.  

His accomplishments away from Eastbourne were many. He represented Great Britain at the 1977 World Rowing Championships in the M4X. In mid 80s through to the 2000s he was an integral part of the team that steered and propelled Leander Club to massive success where he held the captaincy, and roles as Director of Rowing and Chairman for in excess of 30 years. He was instrumental in bringing Jurgen Grobler to the UK in the early 90s who steered the Redgrave/Pinsent era to World and Olympic success.  He was also the General Manager of Dorney Lake for many years including when it was the rowing/canoeing/kayaking venue for 2012 Olympic Games.  

Ivor was a great friend, mentor and inspiration and through to his last few days he remained tough, determined and full of love. Ivor had time for everyone, if you made yourself available and had aspirations he would always help, support, advise and contribute towards your goals. His generosity often provided the entry pathway for others to achieve greater prospects later in life. On the water, those who trained and raced with him for many years both on the sea and on the river and have many tales of long cold nights, warm summers, victories and losses and saw his unflinching dedication to preparation, boat craft and racing skills. He was the same in his life outside rowing. These memories will stay with them forever.  

Ivor was proud of his Eastbourne roots and of his time at Eastbourne College.
