What a delight it was to be taken back in time with a selection of postcards, all having their own story to tell. From the blitzed streets of Plymouth and other disasters such as the Lynmouth flood of 1952 to less traumatic scenes of places of yesteryear. Seeing how postcards show how places have developed and wondering aloud about the lives of the people accidentally finding themselves in the picture. What became of them? Wish You Were Here? was not a history of postcards but a fascinating look at the stories behind them.
We are so lucky that we have on hand our own expert: College Archivist Paul Jordan is a passionate collector.
He brought to life changing fashions from the hobble skirt to the flapper dress, looked behind the messages written on the back which ranged from the bland to the intriguing. By looking at the changing pictures of the same view taken at different times over the years, we were able to look into a life way back in time but not that way back that many of our audience couldn’t remember… and a talk with tea and posh cake too.
