Jax Comyn (Batcup) (Nugent 1979-81) received her MBE from King Charles III in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace on 10 June 2025.
Jax was awarded the MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours in 2024 for services to education in Kenya. She is the co-founder, with her mother Ann, of Bushbells, a clothing company which aims to support the community where the garments are made: Watamu, Kenya. The social enterprise gives secure, ongoing employment to a team of four tailors, and provides the necessary revenue for the building of schools and to support various educational projects and a breakfast club. Bushbells school was completed in 2015 and its sister primary school, Bluebells, followed shortly after. Bluebells now has 150 children and eight members of staff.
Jax said: 'What a HUGE honour and privilege - as I don't save lives or do anything particularly heroic and yet it happened. The most magical day, accompanied by my darling mother who was the inspiration for Bushbells all those years ago, as well as my darling husband and dearest friend who have also been there from the start. Never in a million years did I imagine that a small project aimed at helping one man, Sammy, find work after losing his wife would evolve into something so impactful. Fast forward nearly 20 years, and now we have built two schools! I am incredibly proud of what we've accomplished together.'
