We are sad to announce that Michael Partridge (Blackwater 1946-51) died on Wednesday 22 November, aged 91.
Many will know Michael as the former College archivist, a role he took on in 1998, following his retirement from a long career in industry, accountancy and higher education. He was instrumental in creating an extensive archive of photographs, publications, memorabilia and other items which have helped tell the rich history of the College and its people.
In 2003 he was elected chairman of the Arnold Embellishers, a position he held for 12 years, during which the society doubled its membership. In 2004 he took on the editorship of the Old Eastbournian magazine, later becoming co-editor and regular contributor, particularly of articles about OEs who were in the armed services, as he had a keen interest in military history and aviation. He was a member of the Eastbourne Local History Society, serving as chairman, treasurer and editor of their quarterly journal.
He co-authored the History of the Eastbourne Aviation Company, and in 2010 wrote Maverick Airman, the Life of Frederick Minchin (an Old Eastbournian). He was also co-author of the College history book, 150 Years In Pictures, published in 2018. His most recent achievement was to revise and update the Roll of Honour for the 163 Old Eastbournians who lost their lives in the Second World War, which he completed in 2020.
At the College he was head of Blackwater House, second prefect, Victor Ludorum, captain of fives and a frequent member of the 1st XV.
Michael's son Tim also attended the College (Powell 1977-82), as well as his grandchildren, James (Powell 1999-2004), Alex (Powell 2001-06) and Jessica (Blackwater 2009-14). Michael's brother David was also at the College (Blackwater 1948-51), he sadly died in 2018, aged 83.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Michael's wife Sheila and the family at this time. The OE flag is being flown at half mast in his honour.
