Eastbourne College is saddened to announce the death of John (Jack) H Cluer, on 25 March 2026, a much‑loved former member of staff whose vision, craftsmanship and creativity left a lasting and formative legacy at the College.
Appointed in 1976 to establish craft study courses, Jack set about creating something entirely new. Beginning almost from scratch, he led the transformation of an old workshop during the summer holiday, planning every detail with care, installing new benches, machines and tools, and introducing meticulous systems that reflected his belief in high standards and safe working practices. By the start of the Michaelmas Term, woodwork appeared on the timetable for the first time, offering pupils structured foundation courses and the freedom to pursue ambitious, self‑designed projects. From these early beginnings grew the Design Technology Department we know today.
However, Jack’s influence extended well beyond the workshops. A passionate photographer, he was instrumental in the revitalisation of the Photographic Society in the late 1970s. This period marked 'the beginning of a new phase', with the society benefiting from a fully equipped modern darkroom in the Science Block. Under this renewed energy, the society exhibited work by staff and pupils, supplied photographs for The Eastbournian, and fostered a culture of shared learning through informal talks and darkroom sessions. Jack’s inspiration and advice were warmly acknowledged.
Jack was an innovator with a rare ability to visualise the finished product and the patience to ensure it was done properly. He took enormous pride in his work and delight in encouraging generations of pupils, many of whom went on to develop lifelong skills and careers inspired by his teaching.
Above all, Jack was devoted to his wife June, their three daughters and grandchildren, to whom we extend our sincere condolences.
A short service for family will be held at Eastbourne College on Friday 17 April.
